Episode 35: What Part of You Wants M&Ms? Getting Curious About What Leads You to Food.
Why do you turn to food?
That's the million dollar question, isn't it?
You might have an idea (or maybe you don't--that's ok too). You might say, "Well, I'm a comfort eater." Or, "I eat when I'm stressed." Or maybe even, "Food is my best friend."
But when you really think about it, what do all of those statements really mean? What's really underneath them? What are the specific stressors that lead you to food? Why is food so comforting?
It's that all important question of why.
And answering that question involves getting really curious.
Getting curious and really understanding the parts of you that turn to food is a must.
Merely changing your behavior doesn't work. I'm guessing you've done that dozens of times, at the very least. Sure, you can make a rule that you won't eat past a certain hour, you can cut out a specific food, or you can limit your portions. And none of that will last. Why? Because you're just changing what and how you eat without trying to understand why you're eating.
So on this week's podcast, we're talking about how to take a deep dive into why we use food the way we do. And of course, I think that IFS is the best way to do this.
Getting to know the parts that make up your eating system is the best way that I know to truly make changes in your eating patterns.
But if you're not quite ready for IFS yet, no worries! I also give you a list of questions to ask yourself to help you start thinking about why you use food the way you do.
I fully admit, that this is NOT an easy process. But it does get easier the more you practice it. And it really can lead to a much flexible, enjoyable relationship with food. So check out this week's episode, and start getting curious!
