Episode 34: Are You an Emotional Eater? Here's Why You Need to Stop Dieting.

We're starting Season 2--woo-hoo!

And I'm kicking it off with a three-episode review/outline of sorts. I thought it would be helpful to focus on the three main aspects of my approach to creating a positive relationship with food.  And to talk about why I think they're so important.  Nothing drives me more crazy than to be told what or how to do something but not be told why.  So with each of these three topics, we'll be initially focusing on why they're so important.  Then we'll spend the rest of the season talking about how to make them happen.

So, in the first three episodes, we'll be talking about why you need to:

  1. Move away from dieting

  2. Take a deep dive into your relationship with food, i.e. how and why your parts turn to food

  3. Stop hating your body (yes--how you feel about your body has a huge influence over your relationship with food)

So in this week's episode, we're talking about why it's vital that emotional eaters stop dieting.  I give you six reasons why diets are detrimental to everyone but especially emotional eaters, binge eaters, or anyone else with a complicated relationship with food.  I go into detail on:

  1. Why our bodies don't like diets (spoiler alert: because they're trying to keep us alive)

  2. Why our parts don't like dieting either

  3. How diets create polarizations between your parts

  4. The damage that moralizing food causes

  5. The racist, misogynistic, patriarchal system that is diet culture

  6. How dieting specifically leads to emotional eating

As hard as it can be, one of the best things that all of us can do for ourselves, especially those of us with a complicated relationship with food, is stop dieting.  And we'll be talking about how to do that with the help of Intuitive Eating and IFS on this season's podcast.  But for now, we're looking at why it's so important to leave dieting behind.  Take a listen!
