Episode 9: Internal Family Systems and Emotional Eating: Getting to Know Who's Leading You to Food.
Last week, we talked about the approach that I use with clients called Internal Family Systems, or IFS. In my humble opinion, this approach almost always gives people the missing piece in their confusion about emotional eating:
Clarity.
What do I mean by that? Well, most of my clients will tell you that they're emotional eaters. And/or comfort eaters. And/or stress eaters. But they can't necessarily tell you exactly what leads them to food.
Say you describe yourself as a stress eater. Ok, but what exactly does that mean? What type of stress leads you to food? Is it every type of stress? A specific type of stress? One specific stressful person or situation? Or anything in general that makes you feel pressured?
With the help of IFS, we can finally answer these questions and gain clarity around what exactly is leading us to food.
How do we do that? By getting to know the parts of us that lead us to food.
On this week's podcast, we're talking about the parts that I tend to see that directly or indirectly contribute to our eating patterns. Those parts are:
The Comfort Eater
The Dieter
The Rebellious Part
The Binge Eater
The Intuitive Eater
The parts that we're talking about in this week's podcast are by no means an exhaustive list of parts that contribute to your eating patterns. But hopefully this conversation will help you to understand your internal process when it comes to food and emotional eating.
