Episode 32: Getting Curious About Movement, with Kyra Onysko
As I mentioned last week, I'm not one for exercise. I used to be, but it's been tough to find something that really works for me these days. I think to some degree that it's really because I still have some very diet-y views about exercise. Or, I should say, I still have parts that haven't quite let go of these diet-y views yet. Some of my parts still believe that exercise has to:
Be very consistent--I have to do it at least three times a week or it doesn't count
Involve weight or exercise equipment that I may not even like
Take at least 30 minutes of my time or it's not enough
Not surprising, my parts aren't dying to jump into exercise that checks those boxes.
But thankfully, my podcast guest this week gave me yet another tool to use.
Curiosity.
Whoa--that really made me think. I can just get curious about what my body can do instead of wanting to change how it looks? Wow. Why had I never thought of that before??
Mind. Blown.
On this week's episode, I talk with Kira Onysko, a Certified Personal Trainer and Inclusive Fitness Specialist, about approaching exercise--or movement--with curiosity. Meaning wondering what your body can accomplish performance-wise, as opposed to trying to change what it looks like. And Kira shows us what that can look like.
Kira also gives some great advice on getting started with and maintaining a movement routine. She suggests that we:
Start slow and slowly increase our time
Make it manageable, i.e. don't set goals that you can't meet
Make it social
Choose activities you enjoy
Focus on performance goals, not aesthetic goals
Kira also talks about her own story with hating her body and constantly comparing it with others. She's up front about the disordered eating patterns she developed in response to her negative feelings about her body. And she shares how she changed all of that to become the size inclusive trainer and eating disorder awareness advocate that she is!
