Episode 58: Who Ate That? How to Get to Know Your Eating Parts.
The best way to make a change in your emotional eating patterns is to get to know all of the parts of you that lead you to and away from food. Only then can you truly understand why you're doing what you're doing--or rather who's doing what they're doing--and change it.
Let's say you know that you eat for comfort. That's great insight, but do you know exactly why there's a part of you that needs comfort in the moment that it needs it? Do you know what triggered it? How it thinks food will help? And what else it might need instead?
With the help of IFS (Internal Family Systems), we can answer all of these questions. We can hear from the part itself why it wants to comfort us with food. And when we have that connection to the part, we can learn what else it might need. Maybe the part is turning to food because it doesn't know what else to turn to. Maybe food is the only thing that this part thinks is available. Maybe what it really needs is to just be heard. Or maybe it really needs to just go watch some cute puppy videos! We can find out all of this when we talk to our parts directly.
In today's episode, I'm walking you through that process. With the help of my Eating Parts Cheat Sheets, we're going to start getting to know the parts that make up our Eating System.
We'll also be discussing this at the Finding Peace with Food and Your Body webinar on March 29th! Head here to register! But if you can't make it (or you missed it), sign up anyway--it will be recorded.
