Episode 30: Feeling Emotional? Here's How IFS Can Help.

I don't know about you, but I've been feeling a lot of heavy emotions since the ruling on Roe.  I'm incredibly sad and absolutely enraged about where we are now.  And I'm terrified for how this will impact so very many women and young girls.

So I thought it might be helpful to talk about how to tend to those heavy emotions on this week's podcast.

And of course we're using IFS to do that.

Using IFS, to me, is the best, most effective way to tend to our emotions.  Even the really heavy ones.  And why is that?  Because IFS reminds us that our emotions belong to our parts.  They don't encompass all of us.  When I say I'm angry, what I really mean is a part of me is angry.  Not all of me.  And that makes a big difference.

And IFS also shows us that we have a Self that is compassionate toward and curious about our parts.  Our Self is extremely validating and healing to our parts.  When our parts feel that, they calm down and the emotions they carry are less intense.  Which means you're not feeling nearly as emotional.

So in this week's podcast, we're talking about how IFS can help you to tend to your emotions.  I talk about the concept of unblending, which is the way in which we put some space between our parts and our Self.  That space allows us to not get overwhelmed by our emotions.  And it allows us to give our parts some compassionate Self-energy to validate and help them.

Unblending is at the heart of IFS and is one of the most helpful pieces of the model.  In the podcast, I give you details on the following steps to take to unblend from your parts:

  1. Noticing where the part is in your body

  2. Noticing how you experience the part

  3. Asking the part to step back

  4. Asking the part to dial it down

  5. Drawing your part

I also show you how all of this works by using myself as an example and demonstrating my own process.
